4 years into Internet Marketing it’s now time to get up close and personal with SEO!
Why? Well, the amount of comments i’ve received over the past 2 weeks from my email list has spurred me into action. I want to thank each and every one of you for taking the time to email me and ask for an SEO Tutorial. Before I get into the ‘meat and potatoes’ I want to just cover a few basics, is that OK?
SEO Tutorial – What Is SEO?
Search Engine Optimisation (or Optimization depending where you are reading this!) or SEO is a term used to define how your online content is syndicated, sorted and found by the relevant Search Engines (Google, Bing, Yahoo being the most popular). Although not considered a dedicated Search Engine in it’s own right, another big boy has hit the scene! I bet you can’t guess!
I’ll put you out of your misery….it’s YouTube! Yes, everyone’s favourite video hosting platform, mysteriously purchased by Google (big SEO hint here!) and now the #2 most widely used ‘Search Engine’ after it’s big brother. So, should we take a look at Google ahead of the others? Absolutely!
Most people’s interpretation of SEO is how far and fast their website can rank in Google’s ‘Organic’ search results. Organic is basically your free results that appear after the top 3 Adverts that are usually shaded in pale yellow. Be aware that the results that appear in the right hand side of the page are also adverts.
- Paid Ad’s – The Top 3 bidders sit here (Prime advertising space)
- Other Ad’s – The ‘poorer’ advertisers!
- The ‘Organic’ Free listings – The ‘Holy Grail’ of searches!
- Google+ Local listings (more on that in later posts)
So, the ‘Holy Grail’ of Search Engine Marketing (SEM – another acronym, if things aren’t confusing enough eh!) is to appear where number 3 is above. This is free advertising (as is 4 but i’ll go over that in another blog) but what are the biggest benefits of appearing at the top of the organic’s?
- Tons more traffic to your website or video
- More credibility – 75% of people trust recommendations and organic results rather than paid ad’s. I can fire up an ad in 30 seconds and get to the top of Google!
SEO Tutorial – What Next?
I get it, all these stats and pretty pictures are very nice, but how the heck do you get anywhere near the coveted Page 1 of Google? Don’t ask me! Only joking, let’s get down to business eh!
